The Art of Typography: An Introduction to Typo.Icon.Ography
Published in Hardcover by Watson-Guptill Pubns (May, 1986)
Author: Martin Solomon
Average review score:

Martin is a great guy and typographer
I have Martin's class this semester. Great guy and teacher, he is very good at explaining typography in a vivid, easy to absorb way. He is very open to new things unlike the other old school typographer. He can give one simple piece of advice and make your design stronger.I read this book briefly before this semester, I could not stop until I had to leave my friend's house. Most typography books I have come across are very arrogant and trying to be sophisticated. Martin's book is very down to earth and inspiring. There are some assignments at the end of the book. They are simply fun to do... A must have for beginners(I wished this was my first typography book) to advance typographers. The only thing is that this book is in black and white... some colors would be nice

A solid book on the esoteric practicalities of type & design
Lot of good material here on all aspects of design, focused in on the broad subject of typographic design. A must for any dedicated typographer or designer.

Ascendant: Your Karmic Doorway
Published in Paperback by Red Wheel/Weiser (July, 1988)
Author: Martin Schulman
Average review score:

Enter through this Doorway
Properly interpreting the Rising Sign or Ascendant is one of the most difficult areas for intermediate astrology students. I don't mean by sign and house, but rather the dynamic and interactive relationship of the Ascendant/Rising Sign with the 1st, 12th and 7th houses and also its practical function as a screener of the environment and an attracter of experience.

Schulman's book is quite thorough and profound to be so short. It is a reference book -- the Ascendant is described through the signs -- but it is unlike any other such book you will find presently in the astrological field.

I highly recommend this book and the others in the series as a permanent set to enhance your astrological reference library.

A Man of Few Words Illuminates The Ascendant For Us!
Martin Schulman does it again -- writes a wonderful book in few words that you find exposing reality to you in intense, yet unfolding doses over time. He notes that we often look to our charts to show us potentials, overlooking reality. "Thus, instead of seeing the individual as he or she truly is, we envision future possibilities which may or may not manifest. Every person's chart contains within it all of the possibilities that the person needs for a full life. But it is only when we are 'plugged in' to the way in which our inner being receives and gives illumination (from and to the outer environment) that the fullness of life becomes a realizable fact. I feel that the ascendant is the expression of each person's reality. ...The ascendant then becomes a doorway to understanding reality -- not through the potential it can reach, but rather, through the essence that it IS reaching. The ascendant as 'doorway' becomes the filter between all that exists inside the chart and all that exists in the outside world."(p4) Schulman goes beyond what most astrologers delineate as the purpose of exploring one's ascendant, beyond physical appearance and the way one presents him- or herself to the world, to the way one relates to one's own appearance and how we base our opinions of others on how we judge their appearance, leading us to "...tend to see life through a rather one-dimensional viewpoint, and many of their problems center around feelings of emptiness, lack, and struggles for self-worth."(p95) "Yet," he says, "...there is enough proof everywhere for us to realize how easily we can be deceived if we put too much importance on physical appearance. It is impossible for anyone to establish a real identity if he does not know the nature of reality."(p96) "The only reality there is comes from the universal oneness. If we understand that the chart is a symbol for all the possible energies and possibilities that the universe gives us, then we can understand the ascendant is that point through which the ever-flowing stream of divine consciousness pours through us to contact the external world. Only when we realize this can we begin to understand the implications of correct or incorrect identification through the ascendant."(p97) Martin Schulman's series of books, KARMIC ASTROLOGY, are excellent resources, deep yet concise, and this book continues his sharing exposition.

Aston Martin V-8 (High Performance Series)
Published in Hardcover by Arco Pub (June, 1985)
Author: Michael Bowler
Average review score:

Worth searching out if you're into V8s
Michael Bowler worked for Aston in the '70s, so his knowledge of the V8's development is comprehensive. Good detail on the Vantage and Volante, the ownership struggles, the acquisition by Victor Gauntlett, etc... if you collect Aston books, and care at all about the V8s, you need this one.

A must have for those interested in the Aston Martin marque
For this particular model of the Aston Martin Martin marque this book is quite informative. Additionally, it provides photos serving as examples of this model. It's quite essential to the library of any AM enthusiast.

Astrolocality Astrology: A Guide to What It is and How to Use It
Published in Paperback by The Wessex Astrologer (January, 1999)
Author: Martin Davis
Average review score:

"A Whole New World"
I'm not a professional astrologer, or even a particularly good astrologer, but I am a seeker of "things that work." This system unquestionably "works," as I have by now been able to confirm from my own astrolocality information and that of friends and family members. For a small book, it is full of interesting and useful things, one of which I didn't see mentioned by other reviewers here so I'll add it. It is the application of local space lines to one's personal feng shui. I now sleep better, having dealt with the Pluto line energy crossing my bed and having brought in Lunar energy; and my computer (on a Neptune line) used to freeze up frequently and now does so but rarely. Too, I can confirm that many of my most "comfortable" friends and patients live along my Venus line, and I now know where I can look for more!

A fascinating application the author also uses for "local space lines" helps support the idea that the U.S. was "born" at 11 a.m. on 4 July 1776 in Philadelphia. With that information and Local Space Lines, he shows us that our Uranus line goes near D.C., and through Montgomery, Atlanta, Boston and London! In London was centered the power we were "liberating" (Uranus) ourselves from; British people, he says (he should know since he lives in Scotland), say they feel "free" when they come to the States; and Boston was a center of revolutionary activity! He further points out that Montgomery was a capital of the Confederacy.

Being from New Haven, CT, I couldn't help notice that the same line goes through that city (home of Yale) and near Princeton, NJ; "liberal" (or "liberating"?) education, anyone? I think he has made a strong case for this "birth" time!

I was a bit surprised by the same token that Mr. Davis did not follow along a bit farther down that path, though, since this Uranus line has proven highly significant for the civil rights movement. For instance, Montgomery and Atlanta were both extremely important in the career of Martin Luther King, Jr., who was granted an honorary doctorate by Yale (and who in his youth used to go to Connecticut and called it "God's country" because of the much lower level of racist practices)! And in the previous century, New Haven was also highlighted by being the center of the famous "Amistad" trial.

The information is probably inexhaustible. Anyway, the book is well worth buying and reading. It "works"!

a very neat book
Astrolocality is still a quite unresearched subject in astrology. In this book you will find a very useful overview of space charts (ACG, geodetic, local space charts...) and how to interpret them. Martin Davis has written this book from his own experience and the subtitle says it all: this book is a guide to what astrolocality is and how to use it.

Auto mechanics fundamentals : how and why of the design, construction, and operation of automotive units
Published in Unknown Binding by Goodheart-Willcox Co. ()
Author: Martin W. Stockel
Average review score:

Where have you been all my life?
This book is absolutely the best auto text written. It's great for the "want-to-be Mechanic" with minimal understanding of how cars work or even if you have no intention of ever picking up a wrench. Without jargon and pretense the authors make clear all that one should know about what goes on under the hood. The chapters are full of color pictures and exploded diagrams that make sense! This book is for everyone-man, woman, and teenager-who can read (at the high school level) and drives a car. It's as simple as that.

Awakening to Zen: The Teachings of Roshi Philip Kapleau
Published in Paperback by Shambhala Publications (10 April, 2001)
Authors: Philip Kapleau, Rafe Martin, and Polly Young-Eisendrath
Average review score:

The Essential Guide For The New Student of Zen
I was prepared to not like "Awakening to Zen" when it was given to me by one of my students. I was happily suprised to find the best book I had ever read on Zen Buddhism. Kapleau-Roshi addressed the concerns of the Western Zen Sangha, while stil maintaining a traditional Zen outlook. On a scale of 1-5, this could only be rated a ten!! Extremely Highly Recommended.

One of the finest books on Zen
Once again, Kapleau Roshi has out done himself."Three Pillars of Zen" has always been the Zen Bible. "Awakening to Zen"is a perfect companion. Easy to understand, The Roshi writes for everyone, so everyone can be touched by the beauty of a Zen life. Thank you Sir!

Awareness: The Key to Living in Balance
Published in Paperback by Griffin Trade Paperback (December, 2001)
Authors: Osho and St Martins Press
Average review score:

Clarity in great abundance...
...that is typical of Osho. Awareness is the heart of all sincere effort, and nobody says it better. This book contains the elixir a confused, mind-addled world needs so very badly. Buy three...one for yourself, and two for friends, and ask them to do the same.

Osho knows what he is talking about
The subject of awareness is the most trascendental, complex and profound in the field of spirituality. Awareness is the real direction of life evolutionary process on this planet. Today, only very few persons in the world can speak with authority about this subject. Osho is one of them. I do not know of others, except Krisnamurti and Gurdjieff in the past. I found Osho the most elocuent, clear and compassionate of all. Thanks to St. Martin Press for giving us this rare gem of practical insight.

The Baby-Sitters Club: Mallory and the Mystery Diary/Mary Anne and the Great Romance/Dawn's Wicked Stepsister/Kristy and the Secret
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (November, 1991)
Author: Ann Matthews Martin

I loved Mallory and the Mystery Diary!
Mallory and the Mystery Diary is about Mallory and Stacy thinking there is a ghost in Stacy's new house. They find old portriats and a big old-fanshioned trunck. They find out a rich family lived here in the 1800's. Mallory gets to keep the truck. Her brothers finally open it (she has brothers that are triplets!), and finds fine, old clothing and a diary with a stack of papers. She reads the diary and finds a mystery that needs to be cleared. Finally she reads the stacks of paper and it was admitted. This is the best book! I loved the book!

I loved Kristy and the secret of Susan.
Please put this book on video so I can buy it. The only thing is that you didn't say if she changed or not at the end. Please try to get Ann M. Martin's signiture and give it to me!
